Mike Stanton cut loose

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Reds have designated relief pitcher Mike Stanton for assignment. By doing this, they will have to eat about $3.5million owed to him over the next two seasons.

There had already been news that the Reds didn’t want Stanton to take up a spot, and that they were looking to trade him so that they wouldn’t loose the money. Apparently there were no takers, so rather than put him on the roster just because they are paying him, they are giving the spot to someone who deserves it more. Dusty Baker had commented on the fact that he didn’t want to keep Stanton just because of the money issue. It seems the higher ups agreed with Dusty and did what was best for the team.
