Mets interested in Claudio Vargas

The New York Post is reporting that there is strong interest from the Mets in starter Claudio Vargas, who was released by the Milwaukee Brewers yesterday. The Mets are considering all fifth-starter options because Orlando Hernandez and Mike Pelfrey have been extreme disappointments this spring. El Duque is probably around 75 yrs old, and Pelfrey hasn’t exactly inspired confidence, so the Mets need someone to bolster their rotation.

“That’s a good name,” Minaya said. “We’re going to take a close look at him.”

Any interested teams realize that Milwaukee released Vargas as a salary dump, so if they don’t feel the pitchers in their rotation are better than him, than the 29 year old righty could be a very strong addition. I expect him to draw heavy interest from more than just the Mets.
